Flu, Allergy, and Colds.

She started off with a cough here and there. Before I knew it had escalated into small coughing spells. That is all it took when I realized I had to do something quick before she got worse. I asked her if she was feeling bad and she said her body was aching and she had watery eyes and a runny nose.

I quickly went into overdrive. Knowing at her age of 93 I had to be quick in getting her immune system up. The best defense is a good offense. And a strong immune system is the best defense when faced with colds, and the flu. To get rid of her cough I gave her Herbion All Natural throat syrup. And I was surprised by how quickly it had got rid of her cough. It was almost immediate. This syrup also strengthens the immune system.

To Alleviate Symptoms.

The next step that was key to stopping her runny nose, was to put her on an all liquid diet, I completely cut out all sweets and dairy. And I gave her coconut water to help her stay hydrated. At nighttime, I gave her a rub down with alcohol and applied two drops of tea tree to the bottom of her feet and on the sheets of her bed, and did some reflexology.

In the morning she woke up feeling better her body aches were gone and her runny nose had stopped. I gave her some organic chicken noodle soup for lunch and kept giving her the throat syrup. Her eyes were still a little watery, so I decided to keep her on a clear liquid dinner and gave her beef soup with carrots, cabbage, and potato. I could notice she was getting better by night time.

This morning she was all better no cough, no runny nose, and no watery eyes. I kept her away from candy and cut down on her sugar intake. At her age, I know how quickly she can get worse. I stay on top of preventive measures and wellness methods to make sure it doesn’t travel to her chest or become a sinus infection. At the first sign of allergies, cold, or the flu. I cut down on sugars and dairy.

Sugar and Diary.

Why cut down on sugar, well sugar decreases the number of white blood cells and weakens your immune system. You should stay away from refined sugars while you’re getting over a cold. Avoid milk and other dairy products while you’re sick. Dairy products stimulate the production of mucus and will make you feel worse.

Elderberries and Elder Flowers (Sambucas nigra)

Elderberries can be taken in a syrup or tincture form. I love to make a tea with elderflowers and sweeten it with honey. Some of the benefits of this extraordinary medicinal herb are as follows:
Builds blood.
Enhances the immune system.
Fights inflammation.
Lowers fevers.
Soothes the respiratory tract.
Stimulates circulation.
Has powerful antioxidant properties.
Keep in mind not to consume the stems of this plant since it contains cyanide and can be very toxic. The Berries and flowers are safe to consume.

Elderberry Water Kefir.

I enjoy making water kefir and I have found by adding about 1 tablespoon of dried elderberries to 16oz. of water kefir it adds a pleasant taste and it is good for your health. I also make strawberry water kefir which is loaded with vitamin c. Strawberry water kefir is also simple to make add 7 to 10 dried strawberries to 16oz of water kefir let it ferment for a day and you’re ready to enjoy the benefits of water kefir. In case you didn’t know strawberries have higher amounts of vitamin c than oranges.

In my coming blogs, I will show you how I make water kefir and where to purchase good kefir grains. I am happy to say mom is still doing well. She started getting sick on a Saturday and today is Tuesday. I am still giving her the all-natural throat syrup. Try some of these simple steps to help get over your cold or avoid it altogether.

Welcome to my blog. I started this blog because of my passion for self-care and wellness. My name is Mary. I am a licensed Esthetician, certified Reiki practitioner/teacher and certified life and wellness coach. I started learning about herbs and alternative healing practices through my grandmother, who was a practicing herbalist and spiritual healer. During my infancy she would often treat me with herbal teas when I was sick. I learned a great deal from her. Throughout the years as a practicing healer with herbs, Reiki, meditation and other modalities I have found that the mind and emotions are the root cause of many diseases. I share in this blog what I have learned, practice and continue learning. So that you can benefit as much as I have. I am a single mother and currently a caregiver for my 98-year-old mother.
