What are Lymphocytes?

A lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell found in the lymph, blood and other tissues , like the bone marrow and tonsils. There are 3 important types of lymphocytes. B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes and non-B, non-T lymphocytes. These cells are a crucial part of the immune system. B-lymphocytes are responsible for antibody production. T-lymphocytes are responsible for the direct attack against invading organisms.

T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes

T lymphocytes or T cells mature in the thymus gland  and are responsible for identifying and then destroying cancerous cells, viruses, and bacteria and fungi. B lymphocytes or B cells are made by and mature in the bone marrow. B cells produce anti-bodies. When a B cell is presented with a foreign substance it makes an antibody to match it and stores a blueprint of the invader so it can start production of antibodies in case another exposure occurs even if a long period of time has passed.

smoking

What causes a decrease in Lymphocytes

Several things can affect the production and function of T cells and B cells. Smoking tobacco can disrupt lymphatic function. And weaken your body’s immune response. Nicotine increases cortisol levels. And reduces B cell antibody formation and T cells response to virus, bacteria, and other pathogens. Excessive alcohol consumption reduces the number and function of T cells. Stress can suppress the normal activity of white blood cells and deplete the body of important nutrients.

Vegetables, nutrition.

How to Increase Lymphocytes

Lymphocytes can be increased by adopting a health lifestyle. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables. It is important for increasing lymphocytes because fruits and vegetables are more nutritious in terms of vitamins and minerals.

Exercising regularly will help your lymphatic system work properly. The lymphatic system does not function like the vascular system. Because the lymphatic system does not have a pump. The lymphatic system needs movement. One way is through exercise. As you walk, run, jog or do yoga your muscles flex and help push the lymph throughout your lymphatic system. Which in turn keeps production of lymphocytes optimal. Another way to get your lymphatic system working if it is sluggish is with a lymphatic massage.

Get enough sleep, whatever that may be for you. Some people do well with 6 hours but others need 8 hours. Whatever your number is get what your body needs. Not getting enough sleep can not only impact your energy level but can also effect your lymphocyte production.

panic, stress

Better health! Less stress and worry.

Why worrying and stressing can harm your immune system. When you are afraid your body goes into flight and fight mode. When the body goes into that mode it shuts down all other functions. Including your immune system and diverts energy to send blood to your arms and legs and gets your body to be physically ready for the danger. Excessive worrying can deplete your body of vitamin C. Which is one key vitamin that your immune system needs to fight off viruses and bacteria. If you catch yourself worrying excessively. One suggestion is to learn to meditate. Or simply go on a walk at the park. Allow yourself to stay in the present look at trees, plants, and animals. Get distracted by nature.  Remember stress can reduce your ability to fight off any virus, bacteria, and other pathogen. For other stress management methods see my blog on stress.

Welcome to my blog. I started this blog because of my passion for self-care and wellness. My name is Mary. I am a licensed Esthetician, certified Reiki practitioner/teacher and certified life and wellness coach. I started learning about herbs and alternative healing practices through my grandmother, who was a practicing herbalist and spiritual healer. During my infancy she would often treat me with herbal teas when I was sick. I learned a great deal from her. Throughout the years as a practicing healer with herbs, Reiki, meditation and other modalities I have found that the mind and emotions are the root cause of many diseases. I share in this blog what I have learned, practice and continue learning. So that you can benefit as much as I have. I am a single mother and currently a caregiver for my 98-year-old mother.
